Morocco Tightens Vetting of Dual-Nationality Candidates Ahead of Municipal Elections

The Ministry of the Interior has entrusted the general intelligence services with investigations into candidates for the municipal elections of September 8, in order to guarantee the transparency of the electoral operation and to protect the institutions from any infiltration or financing of unknown origin.

This is the full scope of the investigations carried out by the general intelligence services under the Ministry of the Interior on the candidates for the upcoming elections, and particularly those with dual nationality, reports Assabah.
According to law 59-11 on the election of members of municipal councils, the candidate must not reside abroad, nor hold a governmental, elective or public office in the country of residence. Similarly, the candidate residing in Morocco and holding dual nationality will have to declare his assets both inside the country and abroad. He must also provide an extract of his criminal record to verify the regularity of his financial situation and any link with international trafficking networks.
