Morocco Tightens Mask Mandate: Prosecutors Ordered to Enforce 300 Dirham Fine

Faced with the laxity observed in the wearing of masks, the government has strengthened the law which now forces recalcitrants to pay a 300 dirham fine. Thus, to curb the spread of the virus, the Attorney General of the King at the Court of Cassation called on the public prosecutors to strictly enforce the law.
In a circular sent to the prosecutors, Mohamed Abbdennabaoui sought to put an end to the confusion surrounding Article 4bis of Decree-Law 2-20-503, which sets the penalty for non-compliance with the wearing of masks. He recalled that "the law takes precedence over decrees, when their provisions are contradictory". Thus, he recommends the strict application of the new provisions set out in Law 2-20-92 supplemented by Decree-Law 2-20-503, instead of those contained in Decree 2-20.572, reports Al Massae.
The Attorney General also suggested that the public prosecutors ask the judicial police services to propose an amicable settlement to the offenders, i.e. to pay the 300 dirham fine provided for this offense on the spot, at the risk of being prosecuted, which can lead to a custodial sentence, specifies the same source.
