US-Morocco Ties Spark Concern in Spain Amid Maritime Border Dispute

The climate of proximity that dominates Moroccan-American relations would be causing widespread concern in the Spanish neighbor, at a time when a diplomatic war is raging over the delimitation of maritime territorial borders.
While the Spanish right is trying to exploit the file for political purposes, the current government is avoiding using the veto in the United Nations Council, provided that it is kept informed of any new mapping, intended to delimit the economic zone of Morocco, or continental shelf off the Canary coast.
For the former Spanish Minister of the Interior, Jose Manuel Garcia Margayo, the territorial demarcation should be done with the approval of the United States, otherwise Morocco would be exposed to retaliation.
Thus, the Moroccan initiative could reflect an underlying American threat against Madrid, and its new coalition government, which includes the undesirable political party, Podemos.
