Morocco's Throne Feast Disrupts Summer Plans: Walis and Governors Cut Vacations Short

The Throne Feast celebrated on July 30th of each year forces the officials of the territorial administration, namely the walis and governors, to shorten or postpone their personal leave to August or September.

The walis and governors will not be able to enjoy their summer vacations. Some of them are currently on annual leave and have chosen to spend it with their families within the country, while others have gone abroad, particularly to Spain. But they have to cut short their summer holidays. The preparations for the throne feast oblige them. Even if this period is traditionally considered a season of annual leave, the officials of the territorial administration must remain at their posts in order to directly supervise the organization of the festivities, including the official rituals that accompany them, and to ensure their smooth running in an atmosphere marked by rigor.

According to sources, all the governors and walis receive, before the date of the Throne Feast, guidance notes containing precise instructions concerning the organization of local celebrations, the securing of official ceremonies, as well as coordination with the various security services and service providers, in strict compliance with the royal protocol. Deferring to these instructions, these territorial officials must make the necessary mobilization efforts, ensure the reception arrangements, supervise the distribution of royal prizes and decorations that are awarded to distinguished citizens in various fields.

They must also ensure the representative participation of elected officials and civil society in the allegiance ceremony.
