Four goals scored, none conceded. The Maghreb derby turned into a one-sided affair on Monday, October 12, at the Prince Moulay Abdellah complex in Rabat. Facing an Algerian side making its first appearance in the competition’s final tournament, Hicham Dguig’s men quickly imposed their superiority.

Younes M’Kasri opened the scoring before a second Moroccan goal extended the lead. At half-time, the Fennecs were already trailing 2-0, having failed to seriously trouble the Moroccan defence.

Four goals and top spot

The second half brought no change. Youssef Jaouad added to the scoreline, netting Morocco’s final two goals. At 4-0, the evening had become a rout for Noureddine Benamrouche’s players, who were unable to find a way through.

The win puts Morocco top of Group A, ahead of Zambia, who beat Libya (3-1). Both teams have three points, but the Atlas Lions have a better goal difference.

Already African champions in 2024, following their triumphs in 2016 and 2020, the Moroccans are aiming for a fourth consecutive title. Their next opponents will be Zambia on Wednesday, October 14, while Algeria will look to get back on track against Libya the same day.
