Morocco’s Tax Revenue Drops 7.9% Amid Economic Slowdown

Gross tax revenues amounted to 82.6 billion dirhams (MMDH) at the end of May 2020 compared to 89.7 MMDH at the end of May 2019, a decrease of 7.9%, according to the Treasury General of the Kingdom (TGR).
In its monthly bulletin of public finance statistics for the month of May, the TGR indicates that the change in tax revenues is the result of a 10.8% decrease in customs revenues and a 6.6% decrease in domestic taxation. Regarding gross customs revenues, they amounted to 22,409 MDH at the end of May 2020 compared to 25,132 MDH a year earlier, down 10.8% or -2,723 MDH compared to their level at the end of May 2019.
According to the same source, net customs revenues (customs duties, import VAT and excise duties on energy products) amounted to 22.366 billion dirhams (MDH) at the end of May 2020 compared to 25.110 MMDH a year earlier, down 10.9% or -2.744 MMDH compared to their level at the end of May 2019. As for tax refunds, rebates and restitutions, they amounted to 45 MDH at the end of May 2020 compared to 22 MDH a year earlier.
Regarding the gross revenues of domestic taxation, they amounted to 55.6 MMDH at the end of May 2020 compared to 59.5 MMDH at the end of May 2019, a decrease of 6.6% or -3,911 MDH.
As for the net revenues realized under domestic taxation, they amounted to 51.6 MMDH at the end of May 2020 compared to 55.7 MMDH at the end of May 2019, a decrease of 7.5% or -4,156 MDH. In addition, tax refunds, rebates and restitutions borne by the general budget amounted to 4,023 MDH at the end of May 2020 compared to 3,778 MDH a year earlier.
