Morocco’s Tax Base Expands: Over 370,000 New Taxpayers Identified in 2019

According to the 2019 activity report of the Directorate General of Taxes (DGI), a total of 371,192 new taxpayers were identified in 2019 compared to 199,816 in 2018, an increase of 52%.
The expansion of the tax base, combined with the DGI’s efforts to improve its mastery of the tax base, contributed to the 5% increase in spontaneous revenue over the 2018-2019 period, compared to 1.5% over the 2017-2018 period.
According to the DGI, the automation of the management processes it has launched has facilitated the systematic relaunch of defaulters. For 2019, it specifies, the average compliance rate after the relaunch was 34%, i.e. a total of 7,170 declarations filed and 694.5 million dirhams (MDH) recovered.
The city of Casablanca accounts for nearly 54% of the number of declarations filed after the relaunch and 59% of the amount recovered, notes the DGI, adding that 44,941 new registrations as self-employed workers were recorded during the year 2019.
And to conclude that this population has increased by 52% compared to 2018 and now counts 131,110 self-employed workers.
