Morocco Targets Chinese Tourism Market Ahead of 2030 World Cup

Morocco is reconquering the Chinese market. Of the 1.32 billion international tourists expected in 2030, the year the kingdom will co-host the 2030 World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal, nearly 19% are expected to come from China.
Morocco is tackling a market of over 1.4 billion people. During a meeting, the Minister of Tourism, Handicrafts and Social and Solidarity Economy, Fatim-Zahra Ammor, and her Chinese counterpart, Vice-Minister of Culture and Tourism Quan Rao, discussed the need to strengthen tourism ties between the two countries, reports L’Observateur du Maroc et d’Afrique. Fatim-Zahra Ammor stressed the importance of Chinese investments in the Moroccan tourism sector, particularly in anticipation of upcoming major sporting events. She also invited Chinese tour operators to include Morocco more in their offers, thus allowing Chinese tourists to discover the diverse experiences the country has to offer, including its cultural wealth, vast deserts, and idyllic beaches.

As for Quan Rao, he emphasized the growing interest of Chinese tourists in Morocco. He also mentioned the possibility of new air links to facilitate travel between the two countries. Missions to China will be organized to raise awareness among investors and key tourism players as part of this collaboration. A working group responsible for monitoring the recommendations made will also be set up to ensure effective implementation of the proposed initiatives.
In 2018, Morocco welcomed 170,000 Chinese visitors. This figure rose to 180,000 the following year, before falling to 27,979 in 2022 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. But the upturn is gradually returning: 59,719 Chinese tourists arrived in Morocco in 2023. A figure that could climb this year.
