Morocco’s Tanger-Med Port Expands to Become Mediterranean’s Largest Container Hub

Tanger-Med has made it possible to attract a large part of world trade, thanks to the international dimension of its port. The largest port in Africa, with a capacity of 3.5 million 20" containers in 2018, will see its volume increase to 6 million, thanks to an investment of 1.3 billion euros.
The inauguration of new terminals on Thursday, June 27, 2019 will allow the Port of Tanger-Med to surpass those of Algeciras and Valencia in terms of capacity, and to attract more investors and industrialists.
Morocco hopes to reach an annual volume of 4.5 million 20" containers by the end of 2019. Its strategic position should make the Port an industrial-port hub, a call point for shipping companies operating between Asia, Africa and Europe.
"We hope to be able to add 1 million 20" containers per year," said Houari Rachid, the Port Director, adding that the first terminal had reached 3.5 million containers in six years. "Fingers crossed! We’ll be full in six years," he said.
Morocco has invested one billion euros for the first terminal, allowing the creation of 6,000 jobs within the Port, and 70,000 others at the commercial zone level. The Port is also located 50 km from the city of Tangier. This location will allow it to be extended almost at will.
