Morocco suspends meat import taxes to cut prices

After cattle and camels, Morocco is expanding the customs advantages granted to importers to strengthen the supply of the national market. The Government Council approved, on Wednesday, July 22, a new draft decree concerning live sheep, red meat and offal.

Presented by the Minister of Economy and Finance, Nadia Fettah, the draft decree provides for the suspension of the import duty applicable to live domestic sheep.

The measure also concerns meat from cattle, sheep, goats and camels. The duty applied to offal from these same animals must, for its part, be modified, according to the Government Council statement.

However, the statement does not specify either the exact duration of this new suspension or any quotas imposed on importers. It also does not detail the new rate that will be applied to offal. These elements will need to appear in the final text of the decree.

This decision comes as Morocco is already applying exemptions to imports of certain animals. The 2026 Finance Law notably maintained until December 31 the exemption of import duties and VAT on a quota of 300,000 cattle and 10,000 camels.
