Morocco Surpasses South Africa in African Tourism Rankings, Report Shows

According to a report by a Spanish firm, Morocco has for the first time surpassed South Africa in the tourism ranking in Africa.

According to the latest 2024-2025 Country Brand Ranking/Tourism Edition report by the Spanish firm Bloom Consulting, Morocco ranks second in the tourism ranking in Africa, ahead of South Africa and behind Egypt, consolidating its reputation as a leading tourist destination on the continent. The kingdom owes its position to progress made in terms of engagement on social networks, online performance and overall attractiveness of the destination. The report also highlights Morocco’s resilience in the face of challenges, including the 6.8 magnitude earthquake that struck central Morocco, killing 2,862 and injuring around 6,000. "The country’s resilience to challenges, such as the recent September 2023 earthquake, will be crucial in shaping its future tourism landscape and will provide relevant data for the analysis of future rankings," the report states.

To compile its ranking, Bloom Consulting evaluated destinations based on criteria such as tourism revenue, search engine queries, website performance and social media presence. Among the 35 leading African destinations evaluated, 20 showed improvements. Among them, Sao Tome and Principe gained six places. Boosted by the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN 2024), Côte d’Ivoire moved up 11 places. In contrast, South Africa has regressed and is in third place.
