Morocco Surges as Top Tomato Exporter to EU, Challenging Spain’s Market Share

Morocco is becoming the third largest supplier of tomatoes to the member states of the European Union. Its exports are about to equal those of Spain.
Between January and October 2022, Morocco sold 404.99 million kilos of tomatoes for a value of 637.94 million euros (an average price of 1.58 euros per kilo) compared to 293.37 million kilos sold five years earlier, in 2018, according to a report from the specialized website Hortoinfo, based on data from the Euroestacom statistical service (Icex-Eurostat) and the codes of the Integrated Tariff of the European Communities (TARIC).
With this volume, the kingdom is close to Spain, the 2nd largest supplier to the EU, which sold 424.48 million kilos of tomatoes in the EU against 558.29 kilos in 2018. With 557.88 million kilos sold for a value of 1.095 billion euros, at an average price of 1.96 euros per kilo, the Netherlands are the largest suppliers to the EU.
It should be noted that tomato purchases by the EU have decreased by 5.18% compared to the same period five years ago. In 2018, the volume of tomatoes imported amounted to 2,280.71 million kilos against 2,162.56 million kilos in 2022.
