Morocco Star Ziyech Faces Backlash Over Substitution Reaction in World Cup Qualifier

Hakim Ziyech is under fire on social media after reacting badly to his substitution during the match against Zambia, played on Friday at the Grand Stadium in Agadir as part of the third round of the 2026 African World Cup qualifiers.

Internet users have judged Ziyech’s behavior inappropriate and unworthy of an Atlas Lion, arguing that even the greatest football stars are substituted during matches. In a video posted on his YouTube channel, Moroccan journalist Khalid Yassine has for his part deplored this reaction from Ziyech, which he described as unprofessional.

By behaving in this way, the Galatasaray striker has given a bad image of himself, said the media personality, who has invited Ziyech to review his fiery personality to avoid being sidelined as he was at Chelsea. Khalid Yassine also criticized Walid Regragui, whom he accuses of lacking firmness. According to him, the national coach must impose more rigor within the Atlas Lions.

During his post-match press conference against Zambia on Friday, the Moroccan technician explained his choice to proceed with Ziyech’s substitution in the second half, recalling that the player is returning from injury and that he preferred to play the card of caution. Regragui said he understood Ziyech’s healthy anger, but as a coach, he made the decision to preserve the player, hoping that he will be in better shape and will give his best in the next matches.

Morocco won against Zambia (2-1) on Friday at the Grand Stadium in Agadir, in the third round of the 2026 African World Cup qualifiers. With this victory, the Atlas Lions take the lead in Group E with 6 points. They will face the Congolese team in Kinshasa on Tuesday, June 11, as part of the fourth round.
