Morocco: the new stadiums for the 2025 AFCON are already leaking
Significant water infiltrations have been reported in two of the recently modernized Moroccan stadiums, the Grand Stade de Tanger and the Al Barid stadium in Rabat. These infrastructures, which cost hundreds of millions of dollars and are intended to host the next Africa Cup of Nations, did not withstand the first winter rains of the season.
The incidents occurred on November 13 and 14. Videos widely shared on social media show water infiltrating through the roofs of the stands and in the corridors. In Rabat, the leaks came from the roof, while in Tanger, they were lateral infiltrations in certain passages. These scenes have surprised the public, given the modernity of these sports facilities.
An "alarm signal" before the big events
These leaks, which occurred during the first real climate test, raise serious technical questions about the quality of insulation, drainage and compliance with engineering standards during the construction work, warns Article19. In the absence of an official explanation, the debate on the control of construction sites and the acceptance of the works has been relaunched on social networks, where Internet users are wondering: "Where are the responsible parties?"
These episodes are considered an "alarm signal" as the next international sporting events approach. A rapid diagnosis and the repair of these malfunctions are considered essential to guarantee the safety of the supporters and the image of the country, especially since these stadiums are already hosting official matches.
