Morocco Speeds Up Documents for Undocumented Migrants in Spain

Undocumented Moroccans in Spain will be able to obtain more quickly certain documents necessary for their regularization. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has launched an exceptional action plan to support those affected by Spain’s decision to regularize migrants in irregular situations.

One of the most sensitive points concerns the criminal record, an important document in regularization files. Until now, difficulties had arisen, particularly when it was necessary to establish a power of attorney with a relative in Morocco to obtain the document from the DGSN services.

In a written response to a parliamentary question, Nasser Bourita explains that a new procedure has been implemented with the Moroccan embassy in Madrid, Moroccan consulates in Spain and the competent authorities in Morocco.

A Faster Procedure

From now on, the Moroccan concerned will be able to submit his request directly to the competent consulate, with his national identity card. The consulate will gather the requests, process them initially, then transmit them by secure messaging to the ministry.

The requests will then be sent to the DGSN for the issuance of certificates. Once received, the documents will go through the wilaya of Rabat-Salé-Kénitra for legalization and apostille, before being returned to the consulates by diplomatic pouch. The announced timeframe should not exceed one week.

To absorb the high demand, Moroccan consulates in Spain are also extending their reception hours until 6 p.m. instead of 3 p.m. The number of available appointments has been increased and Saturday has been exceptionally integrated into working days.

Open house days can also be organized on Sunday when pressure is too high. The consulates are also calling on temporary staff to assist the teams on site.

This mobilization comes as consulates must continue to provide other usual services: passports, national identity cards, civil status and routine administrative procedures.
