The National Society for the Study of the Strait of Gibraltar (SNED) denies the information stating that the in-depth studies of the project for a tunnel under the Strait of Gibraltar connecting the two countries, as well as Africa and Europe, have been completed before the 2030 World Cup that Morocco and Spain are co-hosting with Portugal, and that construction work will start as early as next year.
Contrary to the information published by Spanish and Moroccan media, the in-depth studies of the project for a tunnel under the Strait of Gibraltar are still ongoing and have not yet been completed. This is what emerges from the statements of the National Society for the Study of the Strait of Gibraltar (SNED) to SNRTNews. It assures that this large-scale project requires "comprehensive planning", preparation in various aspects: decision-making at the highest level, technical studies, specific explorations, promotion in specialized forums and organizations, financing research, execution methods, application of laws...
Morocco and Spain are now opting for a railway tunnel instead of a tunnel "allowing the circulation of vehicles, due to problems related to traffic congestion, which could cause many problems, especially during peak periods, due to the intensification of the number of freight carriers transiting through the Strait of Gibraltar," reports the Spanish press. A railway tunnel that will allow the transport of vehicles and trucks, as well as the circulation of high-speed trains.
The Gibraltar Strait tunnel project will be on the agenda of the next High-Level Meeting between the two countries scheduled for between May and June, the SNED said. On the agenda of the meeting, the development of a roadmap to assess the studies carried out and finalize the design of this large-scale project; the validation of the 2023-2025 work plan, which will include, alongside the overall strategy to be approved at the same time, the analysis of the feasibility of building an exploration gallery to identify the geo-mechanical characteristics.
