Morocco-Spain Tensions Escalate as Writer Claims Ceuta as Moroccan Territory

Moroccan writer Tahar Ben Jelloun reacted to the new tensions between Morocco and Spain. He stated that "Ceuta is Moroccan land".
"Morocco did not open the borders with Spain to put pressure. [...] If Morocco really wanted to punish Spain and moreover Europe, it would have opened the other borders with Spain that it has been guarding since 2007 with 20,000 Moroccan agents protecting them from illegal immigration," he said on CNews.
Last week, 8,000 people illegally entered the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. A migration crisis caused by the diplomatic crisis between the two countries. "The origin of this crisis is in the attitude of Spain, which admitted on its soil on April 18 last, an individual under a completely false identity and knowing full well that this person is a sworn enemy of Morocco, he is the leader of the Polisario (Brahim Ghali) who is waging a war against Morocco, a war financed and armed by Algeria. [...] Spain knew very well that the issue of Morocco’s territorial integrity is a sacred cause and that Morocco is fighting for its Sahara," explained Tahar Ben Jelloun.
For him, the real problem is to know whether Spain wants to maintain normal relations with Morocco or not. "Spain occupied the Sahara until 1975 and then it says it has nothing to do with it. Then we learn that Algeria has been able to talk to Spain and that the price of gas is much more sympathetic to the Spaniards," he continued.
Returning to the border issue, the writer will affirm that "Ceuta is Moroccan land. It has been occupied by Spain for more than 500 years." "Is it normal for a European country today to openly, simply colonize two Moroccan cities? It’s not normal," he hammered.
