Morocco-Spain Diplomatic Rift: A Test of Longstanding Partnership

The diplomatic crisis between Morocco and Spain is at its core a crisis of confidence that must be quickly overcome to allow the two countries, condemned to cooperate, to effectively face their common challenges.

Morocco and Spain, due to their geographical proximity, maintain historical relations in various fields such as the economy, trade and tourism. In reality, the current crisis between the two countries is a crisis of confidence that falls within the normal order of things, according to an analysis by Ahmed Charai in the newspaper La Razón. The author believes that any relationship experiences ups and downs and that it is not beneficial for these two natural partners to suspend their cooperation for too long.

Spain’s new position, which has finally recognized "the extreme sensitivity of Morocco to the Sahara issue," should help ease tensions between the two countries, adds the author who, given the historical ties between Spain and Morocco, advocates for a strong and peaceful partnership between the two countries. "Neighborhood implies respect and trust. The currently tainted atmosphere will give rise to generations educated in mistrust and rejection of the other. This is a responsibility we assume in the face of history," observes the author, who recalls that beyond geographical proximity and history, the two countries develop cooperation in the economic, tourism and commercial fields.

"Spain is not a partner like any other, it has the potential to become Morocco’s first partner. But such a partnership can only be built on the basis of mutual respect," argues Ahmed Charai, who calls on "the press, opinion leaders, real and self-proclaimed, to move away from chauvinist propaganda."
