Morocco-Spain Border Crossing Reopening Faces Uncertainty Despite Official Claims

After more than two months of closure, the border crossing in Sebta will be reopened in the coming days. This is at least what Hassan Abyaba, government spokesman, claims.
According to the minister, the situation could change overnight with the resumption of activities. However, he did not give any details on the modalities and the date on which this reopening will be effective.
Despite this assurance from the minister, doubts remain about the future of this border crossing. A few days ago, its opening had been scheduled by the Moroccan and Spanish authorities on November 4, finally postponed to November 18 and then to November 19, recalls TelQuel.
The border is still not reopened for the time being and it could remain closed for a long time according to the Spanish media. The reason is the construction on December 4 of a fence topped with barbed wire and a ditch. All around this fence, military barracks are installed to make access to the enclave even more difficult.
According to the same source, this closure, at the initiative of the Moroccan government, would have been motivated among other things by the fight against smuggling. It is ensured by women, whose number is between 12,000 and 15,000 people.
Nicknamed the "mule women", they buy goods in Sebta, ranging from cosmetics to blankets, as well as foodstuffs, which are then resold in Morocco under very difficult conditions.
