Morocco Soccer Team Caught in Guinea Coup: Captain Recalls Tense Moments

Moroccan international Romain Saïss has spoken about the coup d’état they witnessed in Guinea when they had gone to Conakry to face the Guinean football team as part of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
"All day long, we saw cars full of armed soldiers at the bottom of our hotel, it wasn’t war, but almost," said the Wolverhampton player to the Dauphiné Libéré.
He explained that he did not know he could live in such a situation. "We heard gunshots, some players thought it was fireworks. We were then told again that a coup d’état was being carried out by special forces. We really became aware of the situation. From our windows, we saw soldiers running with I don’t know what kind of rifle. We thought we were in Call of Duty," he said.
