Morocco Slips to 77th in Global Innovation Index, Outperforms GDP Peers

Morocco has regressed two places in the 2021 annual ranking of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), published on Monday. However, the kingdom remains in the global top 100, ranking 77th.
In its latest report, the UN agency evaluated the strengths and weaknesses in different categories, mainly to determine the capacities and success of innovation in each country’s economy.
To this end, WIPO analysts described Morocco as "above the expected level, given the level of development." They determined that Morocco’s innovation was much higher compared to countries with a similar GDP per capita.
However, Morocco has lost two places compared to the 2020 ranking, and is back in 77th place for this year out of 132 countries. This position ranks it 12th in Africa and 19th in the Arab world.
Switzerland, Sweden, the United States, the United Kingdom and South Korea maintain their positions at the top of the innovation ranking, in the top five, as has been the case for the past three years.
