Morocco Signs €781 Million Deal for High-Speed Trains to Connect Tangier and Marrakech

The National Railway Office (ONCF) has officially signed a contract worth 781 million euros with the French group Alstom for the acquisition of 18 Avelia Horizon very high-speed trains as part of the project to extend the high-speed line connecting Tangier to Marrakech.
The ONCF has entrusted the Alstom Transport SA and Alstom Railways Maroc group with the contract to supply 18 Avelia Horizon high-speed trains. The Avelia Horizon trains are the latest generation of double-decker TGVs. With these trains capable of running at over 300 km/h, it will be easier to reach Marrakech from Tangier. Equipped with two more compact power cars and articulated double-decker cars, these trains combine performance, comfort and energy efficiency.
The Spanish company Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles has been awarded the contract for the acquisition of 40 intercity trains between Casablanca, Rabat and Marrakech, and the South Korean Hyundai Rotem, the contract for the supply of 110 trains for the Regional Express Network (RER). The total value of these three contracts is 29 billion dirhams.
The extension of the high-speed line to Marrakech is a strategic project for the ONCF. It aims to connect the metropolises and stimulate domestic tourism, job creation and territorial equity. The project is part of the railway development plan, with a total cost of 87 billion dirhams, to be implemented in the perspective of the 2030 World Cup.
