Morocco Shifts to Net Electricity Exporter, Slashing Imports by 93%

Moroccan electricity imports have fallen by 93.5%, compared to 2018 when the country imported 2.3 billion dirhams worth.
According to the statistics of the Foreign Exchange Office, only 149 million dirhams of electricity were imported by Morocco. This drop in imports, supported by the peak reached in terms of exports, shows that Morocco is a net exporter of electricity.
For now, Spain remains the main destination for its energy exports. According to statistics from Red Electrica de España, Moroccan electricity exports to Spain stood at 1,207 GWh in 2019, an increase of more than 670% between 2018 and 2019.
Furthermore, the same source states that Moroccan electricity exports to Spain in 2018 only reached 180 GWh.
Beyond this good financial result, these figures are proof that Morocco has reached the required level for energy self-sufficiency.
