Morocco Set to Reopen Diplomatic Office in Tel Aviv After 20-Year Hiatus

A few days after the reopening of Israel’s liaison office in Morocco, the kingdom is about to follow suit. Abderrahim Bayoud could be appointed to serve as chargé d’affaires at the head of this office.

"Rabat should appoint a representative to head its liaison office in Tel Aviv in the coming days, and diplomat Abderrahim Bayoud has the best chance of being appointed," Elaph Morocco said on Wednesday. This historic event comes 20 years after the closure of Morocco’s liaison office. It dates back to 2000, at the beginning of the Intifada (Palestinian uprising).

The future Moroccan diplomat in Tel Aviv is the current director of the North America and Caribbean department at the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Before this position, Abderrahim Bayoud had held several positions, notably in Washington, London, the Netherlands and New York.

On the Israeli side, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the arrival in Morocco of the former Israeli ambassador to Egypt, David Govrin, as the new chargé d’affaires. For the Israeli Foreign Minister, it is a "day of celebrations for the State of Israel."

Last December, the two countries normalized their relations through the signing of an agreement in Rabat. This historic act is sponsored by the United States, with bilateral agreements based on direct air links, water management, connections of financial systems and a visa waiver agreement for diplomats.
