Morocco Set to Raise Butane Gas Prices, Impacting Households

Bad news for consumers. In Morocco, the price of butane gas will rise again this year.
The new year starts badly for Moroccans. They have to face a new increase in the price of 12 kg gas cylinders. The Ministry of Economy and Finance should soon announce a 10 dirham increase, reports Al Ahdath Al Maghribia. According to the Moroccan Association of Liquefied Gas Distributors in Morocco, the measure will not be applied in January. It would also be unlikely to be applied in February next, which coincides with the holy month of Ramadan. In addition, a new and final increase is planned for 2026. It will be for an amount of 10 dirhams for a final retail price of 70 dirhams for the 12 kg cylinder.
Since last year, the price of gas has started to increase as part of a gradual lifting of the butane gas subsidy, in order to reduce the pressure on the Compensation Fund. This lifting took place in May last year, in order to free up financial resources as part of the implementation of the direct social assistance program. According to figures from the Ministry of Economy and Finance, Morocco consumes 2.8 billion tons of gas per year, and the subsidy weighs 15 billion dirhams on the Compensation Fund. Currently, the real price of the 12 kg gas cylinder is 96 dirhams, of which 46.39 are borne by the State.
