Morocco Set to Boost Wind Power Capacity by 1.8 GW, Solidifying Renewable Energy Leadership

Wind power production, the second largest source of electricity production in Morocco, looks promising. The report of the Global Wind Energy Council indicates that the kingdom could increase its production by 1.8 Gigawatt (GW) by 2026.
Morocco is on track to meet its national target of producing an additional 1 GW of wind power by 2024. This is indicated by the data from the report of the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC). According to this report, Africa’s production should increase by 14 GW of wind power by 2026, 5.4 GW in South Africa, 2.2 GW in Egypt with 2.2 GW and 1.8 GW in Morocco.
In Morocco, wind power has become the second largest source of electricity production after natural gas. According to Wind Energy, a data platform focused on renewable energies, wind power is one of Morocco’s most promising renewable energy sources due to high wind speeds, from 7.5 to 9.5 meters per second (m/s) in the South, and from 9.5 to 11 m/s in the North.
Morocco’s potential is also recognized internationally. According to the GWEC, the kingdom ranks, in March, among the top 30 countries with significant offshore wind power potential. At the continental level, Morocco ranks first in terms of offshore wind power production capacity, followed by South Africa, Tunisia, Egypt and Kenya, the GWEC reports. Globally, Morocco ranks 12th. It tops the ranking of leading countries in the field of offshore wind power in the MENA and Africa regions.
