Morocco Set to Become Third-Largest Producer of Medical Isotope in Africa

Morocco will take the 3rd position at the African level in the production of iodine 131, after South Africa and Egypt. A radioactive material that will be used in medical treatments, particularly for thyroid cancer.
The information has just been disclosed by the Minister of Energy, Mines and Sustainable Development, Aziz Rabbah, during a press conference held at the National Center for Energy and Nuclear Technologies. Pleased with this achievement, the minister declares that "this is a first for Morocco, which will start producing and marketing iodine 131".
Founded in 1986 for the peaceful use of nuclear energy, the National Center for Energy and Nuclear Science and Technologies allows the use of nuclear technology for medical, scientific, industrial and agricultural purposes. In 20 years of existence, the center has managed to cover 65% of the needs of hospitals and nuclear medicine departments in radioactive pharmaceutical products.
According to the general director of the center, the preliminary experiments carried out on samples of the radioactive iodine have given excellent results. All the technological prerequisites have been undertaken, pending the validation of the product by the Ministry of Health.
