In 2021, 13 death sentences were handed down in Morocco, bringing the total number of people to 79, according to data revealed by the public prosecutor’s office.
Among them, two women and 18 have been convicted of acts of terrorism, indicates the latest report from the presidency of the public prosecutor’s office, specifying that 24 people on death row can leave it, still having avenues of appeal. These 79 detainees caused the death of 163 people, in the context of the various crimes.
The convicts are between 21 and 77 years old. Three of them are under 30 and two others are over 60, the prosecution noted. By region, 4 death sentences were handed down in Casablanca and four others in Beni Mellal. In addition, 3 death penalty decisions were made in Tangier, one in Rabat and finally one in Meknes, the same source specifies.
Although this number of death row inmates is "slightly up," "the sentence is declining," the public prosecutor’s office stressed, recalling that in 1993 the kingdom had 197 death row inmates.
