Morocco’s Self-Employment Surge: Quadruple Growth in Four Years

The number of self-employed workers continues to increase in the kingdom. At the end of 2021, there were 373,663 of them, four times more than 4 years ago, according to figures from the Directorate General of Taxes (DGI).
More precisely, the number of self-employed workers has increased from 86,169 to 373,663, the DGI reports in its 2021 activity report, stating that this increase in the number of self-employed workers has been driven by simplified creation and deregistration procedures, reduced taxation and the possibility of working from home.
Furthermore, the department identified 186,231 new taxpayers for the year 2021. Natural person professionals account for 64% of these new identifications with 118,762 taxpayers, compared to 36% for legal entities (67,469).
