Morocco Sees 75% Surge in Divorce Cases, Reconciliations Decline

Morocco is facing a worrying increase in divorce cases in recent years. According to the Head of the Specialized Public Prosecution Division under the Presidency of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, Aziza Handaz, the number of divorce cases in Morocco has seen an alarming increase in recent years.
Thus, between 2016 and 2021, the number of divorce cases increased dramatically, from 72,000 to 126,000, an increase of more than 75%.
During a press conference organized by the Moroccan Association of Women Judges, Handaz stressed the significant decrease in reconciliation cases, from more than 20,000 in 2016 to 15,000 in 2021. This clearly shows that Moroccan couples are having more and more difficulty resolving their problems and finding an agreement, reports Snrt.ma.
Faced with this worrying situation, the speakers called for strengthening family mediation services as an alternative mechanism to resolve family conflicts outside the courts.
