Morocco Sees Surge in British Tourists as Spain Grapples with Anti-Tourism Protests

Saturday 12 April 2025, by Sylvanus

Many British tourists have abandoned Spain to spend their holidays in Morocco due to protests against mass tourism accused of being the cause of the housing crisis.

British tourists are no longer welcome in Spain. During the Easter holidays, the Spanish anti-tourism brigade brought out their "TOURISTS NOT WELCOME" banners again. Last weekend, 150,000 angry protesters flooded the streets of Madrid to protest against the housing crisis in Spain, which many blame on their once-cherished visitors. It was one of 40 demonstrations organized across the country. The message is loud and clear. It’s no longer a welcoming "hola!" for the 18 million British tourists who visit Spain each year, but a big "Vete a la mierda!"

Last Saturday, Mallorca organized a demonstration to implore tourists not to come. According to the protesters, they are "the source of (their) problems." Rental cars were vandalized in Tenerife, where the terrifying message "Kill A Tourist" was spray-painted on a wall, reported The Sun. In short, the Spanish no longer want British tourists. They are driving these tourists away even though Spanish tourism brings in 200 billion euros – about 12% of Spain’s annual GDP – thanks to visitors exceeding 90 million each year.

This hostility has pushed some British tourists to rush to Morocco. They say they have traded straw donkeys for real camels, and that a million of them spent their holidays there last year. Their preferred Moroccan destination is Agadir. These British tourists say they no longer tolerate their expensive holidays in Spain being ruined by "rude" and "ungrateful" hosts. They will therefore certainly be numerous to spend their holidays in Morocco again this summer.
