Morocco Sees Sharp Rise in Divorces as Marriage Rates Plummet, Report Shows

In Morocco, the number of marriages has dropped considerably, while divorce cases have recorded a sharp increase over the past fifteen years. This is what the High Commission for Planning (HCP) indicates in a recent report.
The number of marriage contracts fell to 251,000 in 2022, compared to 269,000 in 2021, the HCP reveals in its latest report on social indicators in Morocco, explaining that this downward trend has been observed since 2019, the year in which 275,000 marriage contracts were recorded.
Over the past fifteen years, the number of marriage contracts has plummeted from 307,000 in 2008 to 251,000 in 2022, a decrease of 19%, the note points out. On the other hand, divorce cases (judicial and amicable) have experienced a notable increase over the period, rising from 55,000 cases in 2008 to 88,000 cases in 2022.
