Morocco Sees Sharp Rise in COVID-19 Cases Following Eased Restrictions

Morocco’s epidemiological situation seems well under control, with 237 deaths as of July 6, 2020 at 6 p.m., a fatality rate of 1.65%, and a recovery rate of nearly 70.75%. But on closer inspection, a worsening of the situation is to be feared.

From 595 on June 5 last, the number of positive Covid-19 cases in Morocco has gradually climbed to reach 3,382 on July 1, reports L’Économiste.

This sharp rise is explained by the general relaxation observed after the deconfinement, which began on June 25. Without masks and in violation of other barrier gestures, Moroccans have stormed the souks, beaches, shops, etc.

"People tend to forget that the virus is still among us," says Moulay Mustapha Ennaji, director of the virology laboratory at the University of Hassan II in Casablanca, who adds that at this rate, the situation risks worsening, just days before the likely opening of borders. "We must continue to wear masks, respect social distancing and avoid gatherings," he argues.

With around 40% asymptomatic cases, and an economy weakened by the crisis, Morocco could not cope with a new lockdown. According to the World Bank, the kingdom will experience a 4% recession in 2020.

"The harsh reality is that it’s far from over," announced Tedros Adhanom, the WHO Director-General, on Monday, who acknowledged that the pandemic "is accelerating".
