Morocco Sees Sharp Drop in Vegetable Prices as Food Costs Stabilize

After experiencing strong speculation, the prices of the majority of products have been on a downward trend this week compared to the previous week. On Thursday, the inter-ministerial commission responsible for monitoring supply, prices and price and quality control operations was pleased with this drop, which will allow the population to stock up without stress.
Products such as vegetables, fruits and live poultry are those experiencing a sharp drop, according to a press release issued at the end of the commission’s meeting held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Economy. A meeting that allowed the members of the commission to take stock of the supply situation, the price levels of mass consumer products on the national market as well as the assessment of the interventions of the control commissions. According to the commission, prices have fallen by 9% for tomatoes, -8% for green onions, -5% for carrots and potatoes, -2% for dry onions and -8% for live chicken.
As for the supply of butane gas, distribution is proceeding without any disruption. With regard to the level of price and quality control of food products, the provincial and local joint commissions have traveled around 35,000 wholesale and retail outlets and storage warehouses. The harvest was abundant: 882 violations in terms of prices and quality of food products, the seizure and destruction of 53 tons of goods unfit for consumption. The commission immediately took regulatory measures against the offenders.
The commission intends to continue in this momentum in order to regularly monitor "the level of supply and prices and the assessment of the interventions of the control commissions to deal with any type of fraud, monopolization, speculation or price manipulation".
