Morocco Sees 215% Surge in Tourist Arrivals, Still Below Pre-Pandemic Levels

The flow of tourist arrivals in Morocco has increased sharply during the first four months of the year, reaching 1.5 million tourists, according to the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
In its recent economic note, the Directorate of the Treasury and External Finance (DTFE) noted that Moroccan tourism is recovering, driven by the gradual return of visitors, both foreign and Moroccans residing abroad.
At the end of April, the border posts recorded 1.5 million tourists, an increase of 215% compared to the same period last year. In detail, the number of foreign tourists increased by 428%, while that of Moroccans residing abroad increased by 129%.
This performance was made possible thanks to the reopening of national borders from February 7 last, the improvement of the health situation and the implementation of an emergency program amounting to 2 billion dirhams (MMDH) to support the sector, notes the note, according to which this trend remains nevertheless below the figures achieved in 2019.
According to official data, classified establishments also recorded a 19.8% improvement in overnight stays, at the end of February, due to an increase of +33.1% for non-residents and 15.5% for residents.
