Morocco’s Seasonal Rentals Surge 300% Despite Travel Restrictions

Seasonal tourist rentals have seen a slight improvement this summer, with an increase of more than 300% in demand, from 102,923 in February to more than 420,000 in August. This trend has fallen at the end of July due to the ban on travel between several cities in Morocco.
This increase is explained by the fact that Moroccans anticipated the general deconfinement, which generated a considerable increase in demand since the beginning of May. "This trend then slowed down at the end of July due to the ban on travel between several cities," according to Avito, a sales and purchase platform in Morocco.
While in 2019 the demand was concentrated in four main cities (Martil, Agadir, Marrakech and Tangier), this year the tourist landscape expanded in July: Mohammedia (25,968 contacts), Casablanca (22,430 contacts), Agadir (18,888 contacts) and Bouznika (18,854 contacts).
The supply could not keep up with the movement. There is a 16.71% decrease (from 47,500 ads in August 2019 to 40,700 in 2020). A decline related to the current circumstances (confinements, travel bans, cancellation of holidays...), explains the platform.
The cities of Essaouira and Agadir show an increase in supply from July to August (4% and 2% respectively). This is not the case in Marrakech, Tangier and Fez, which are in free fall due to the health measures adopted by the local authorities.
Overnight rates vary between 300 and 6,000 dirhams, depending on the destination, the type of property and the period.
