Morocco Scraps Plans for Controversial Casablanca Grand Stadium Project

The project to build the Grand Stadium of Casablanca no longer has a chance of materializing due to its unrealism and the opposition of the High Commission for Water and Forests.
Given the changes that have occurred at the national and international levels, the construction of the Grand Stadium of Casablanca, in Labsabess, in the commune of Aïn Tizgha, near Benslimane, will not become a reality.
According to the daily Assabah of July 19, the failure of the Moroccan bid in the race to host the 2026 World Cup, the fierce opposition of the High Commission for Water and Forests to the realization of the project, in a region whose ecosystem would be endangered, and the estimated cost of 3.5 billion dirhams, are among the reasons for the burial of the project.
Furthermore, the remoteness of the Casablanca site, which could lead to less attendance by supporters of the two major clubs in the city, Wydad and Raja, and therefore less profitability, is another weakness of the project.
