King Mohammed VI Undergoes Successful Surgery After Sporting Accident

Two eras. Two different approaches. Each time, the royal palace plays the transparency card regarding the state of health of King Mohammed VI. "During a usual sporting activity carried out this Sunday," the king "suffered a fall resulting in a left shoulder trauma with a fracture of the humerus," said a statement from his medical team relayed by the MAP. "This fracture required surgical intervention, which was successfully carried out today at the Royal Palace Clinic in Rabat," the same source added. And to conclude: the left shoulder of the Moroccan sovereign "will be immobilized for a period of 45 days" and "a period of functional rehabilitation" will follow.

The royal palace has always communicated on the surgical interventions undergone by King Mohammed VI, recalls Jeune Afrique. In February 2018, the royal palace announced that the sovereign had undergone heart surgery in a Parisian clinic following an "atrial rhythm disorder". It had accompanied the press release with a photo of the sovereign on his hospital bed surrounded by his family (children, brother and sisters). It had also specified that the operation had been successfully carried out at the Ambroise Paré clinic, located in Neuilly-sur-Seine, and that the king would continue a preventive medical treatment.

Two years later, the Moroccan sovereign, then 56 years old, had to undergo this operation again. King Mohammed VI presented "a recurrence of this type of atrial flutter on a healthy heart," the royal palace had specified in an official press release. The intervention, which this time took place in Rabat, at the royal palace clinic, had been completely successful.

Under the reign of Hassan II, Moroccans were not used to this transparency about the state of health of the king. The health of Mohammed VI’s father was shrouded in mystery. The son has opted for a transparency that reassures "the young and connected Moroccan population, as well as foreign partners, about the institutional continuity and stability of the kingdom."
