Morocco’s Rice Imports Surge as Consumer Demand Skyrockets in 2020

Rice imports have doubled in the first eight months of 2020. Moroccan companies operating in the sector have had no choice but to follow the strong demand from consumers.
Moroccan companies have conceded a much more colossal budget for the import of rice this year. More than 281 million dirhams compared to 119 million dirhams in 2019, an increase of nearly 162 million dirhams. As for the quantities of rice imported, they have increased from 19,000 tons from January to the end of August last year to more than 52,000 tons in 2020.
This dizzying increase is explained by the fact that Moroccans have changed their consumption habits. According to the president of the Moroccan Federation of Consumer Rights, Bouazza Kharrati, this is also explained by the fact that "rice is used in a wide variety of daily fast food, whether related to meals at home or those provided by restaurants".
