Morocco Reports Sharp Decline in COVID-19 Cases During Ramadan

The health crisis seems to be under control in Morocco. And this is thanks to the preventive measures put in place during the month of Ramadan and their observance in the cities.

The bi-weekly assessment of the epidemiological situation in Morocco shows a sharp decrease in Covid-19 infections, a drop of -19.5% in four weeks, said Abdelkrim Meziane Bellefquih, specifying that this result was obtained thanks to compliance with security measures in the kingdom, especially during this holy month of Ramadan.

This decline is mainly recorded in nine regions of Morocco:
• Guelmim-Oued Noun with -50%,
• L’Oriental -43.3%,
• Rabat-Salé-Kénitra -33.7%,
• Dakhla-Oued Eddahab -29%,
• Marrakech-Safi -23.1%,
• Casablanca-Settat -21.1%,
• Béni Mellal-Khénifra -18.2%,
• Draa-Tafilalet -8.7%,
• Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceima -6.7%.

However, an increase in infection cases was recorded during the last two weeks in the Souss-Massa region with +23%, the Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra region with +28.8% and the Fès-Meknès region with +40%. But during this same period, the virus reproduction rate also fell, reaching 0.90 at the end of the week, the official added. He specifies that Morocco plans to reach a reproduction rate below 0.7.

Since the beginning of the pandemic until May 10, 2021, the kingdom has recorded 513,922 positive cases, a rate of 1,413 per 100,000 inhabitants, making Morocco the 39th country worldwide and 2nd at the continental level in terms of positive cases. As of that date, the country has recorded 9,077 deaths, a mortality rate of 1.8% instead of 2.1% worldwide against a 97.5% recovery rate, or 501,146 people cured, Bellefquih stressed. Moreover, with the reception of additional doses of the Sinopharm vaccine, the national vaccination campaign continues and takes into account people aged between 50 and 55.
