Morocco Reports 7 New Omicron Cases Among Repatriated Citizens in Marrakech

Seven new cases of the new Omicron variant have been detected among Moroccans stranded abroad and repatriated to Marrakech Menara airport on special flights. In total, 45 cases of Covid-19, including five serious ones, were discovered in this group.
The five serious cases were admitted to the intensive care unit of the Ibn Zohr hospital in Marrakech, a medical source told 2M. The seven new Omicron variant cases add to the 112 suspected cases recorded in Morocco between December 14, the date on which the first case of the new variant was detected, and December 23, the date of the last weekly press conference held by Mustapha Baitas, the government spokesman.
Moroccans repatriated from abroad undergo two PCR tests on arrival at the airport. One is to detect the presence or absence of the virus and the other to detect the variant. In case of a positive result from one of the tests, the infected persons are systematically transferred to the hospital. These repatriated Moroccans are placed in a one-week quarantine in hotel establishments in Fez, Casablanca, Marrakech, Agadir or Tangier. They fear an extension of the isolation period.
