Morocco Reports 40% Drop in Fatal Road Accidents, Deaths Down 20%

Last month, 170 deaths were recorded in traffic accidents, (39.93%), compared to 153 fatal accidents, a clear decrease of 40.23%, compared to March 2019.
According to the provisional report established by the Ministry of Transport for the first three months of 2020, compared to the provisional data for the first three months of 2019, there is a 6.61% decrease in bodily accidents (22,948 accidents), 592 fatal accidents, a decrease of 18.12%, 653 killed (a decrease of 19.98%), 1,616 seriously injured (-20.12%) and 30,201 slightly injured (a decrease of 6.85%).
As for the comparison of the provisional report for the period from March 20 to 31, 2020, with the same period in 2019, it reveals spectacular decreases, namely a 80.05% decrease in the number of bodily accidents (693 accidents instead of 3,157), a 76.09% decrease in the number of fatalities (22 instead of 92), an 82.55% decrease in the number of serious injuries (48 accidents instead of 275) and a 79.90% reduction in the number of minor injuries (876 accidents instead of 4,359).
This drastic drop in road safety indicators in March 2020 is justified by the implementation of the health confinement measures imposed in Morocco due to covid-19. This measure, in effect since March 20, 2020, has led to a reduction in the mobility of people to the strict minimum. This has resulted in a sharp decrease in road risks.
