Morocco Reports Drop in Consumer Prices, Led by Food Costs

According to the High Commission for Planning (HCP), the consumer price index (CPI) recorded, during the month of June 2020, a decrease of 0.3% compared to the previous month.
In its information note on the CPI for the month of June 2020, the High Commission for Planning indicates that this drop results from the 1.3% drop in the index of food products and the 0.4% increase in the index of non-food products.
During the period May-June 2020, the declines observed at the level of food products mainly concern "fish and seafood" with 6.5%, "vegetables" with 5.1%, "meats" with 1.3%, "oils and fats" with 0.8%, "coffee, tea and cocoa" with 0.7% and "milk, cheese and eggs" with 0.2%. The largest declines were recorded in Al-Hoceima (2.0%), Tetouan and Safi (1.2%), Beni-Mellal (1.1%), Marrakech and Errachidia (0.8%), Fez (0.7%), Settat (0.6%), Tangier and Guelmim (0.4%).
Regarding non-food products, an 8.1% increase was noted in the prices of "fuels", the note specifies, adding that this increase was recorded in Meknes (0.2%) and Rabat (0.1%).
The note stresses that the inflation indicator, which does not take into account volatile price products and public tariff products, would have recorded during the month of June 2020, a decrease of 0.2% compared to the month of May 2020 and an increase of 0.7% compared to the month of June 2019.
