Morocco Reports Declining COVID-19 Cases, but Regional Hotspots Persist

Covid-19 infections continue to decline in Morocco. Good news to be put into perspective, however, as some regions still in the red zone suggest risks of a resurgence of cases.

A slight improvement. This is how one could analyze the latest figures from the coordinator of the National Center for Public Health Emergency Operations at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Mouad Mbaret, which show a continued slowdown of the "third wave" hitting the kingdom in recent weeks.

On his Linkedln page, the specialist indicated that the circulation of the virus has been constantly decreasing for several days, in the order of about -27.6% in one week and the stabilization of the Covid-19 reproduction rate around 0.89.

Similarly, the positivity rate has continued to decline. This key indicator, which stood at 18.1% between August 23 and 29, reached 14.1% this week (August 30 to September 5), he stressed, adding that two regions this week went from the red level (high viral circulation) to the orange level (moderate viral circulation), without however citing them.

However, "viral circulation remains high in the rest of the regions of Morocco. Attention: the risk of a resurgence of cases in certain regions is not to be ruled out given the movements of the population at the end of the summer holidays and the administrative return", he explained.

The official therefore issued a new call to everyone to get vaccinated as soon as possible, in order to cope with the rapid progression of new variants, and did not fail to recall the hygiene measures and barrier gestures to be adopted to limit the transmission of the virus.
