Morocco Reports 17.6% Drop in COVID-19 Cases as Epidemic Curve Declines

After several weeks of increasing Covid-19 infections and after reaching a peak in mid-August, Morocco is gradually beginning to see the number of cases decline. This is what the head of the Communicable Diseases Division at the Ministry of Health affirms.

In his bi-weekly report from August 17 to 30 on the epidemiological situation, the head of the Communicable Diseases Division at the Ministry of Health, Abdelkrim Meziane Bellefquih, indicated that "the epidemic curve has entered a downward phase after a stage of a surge in cases for five weeks, before reaching a peak before mid-August 2021." Thus, positive cases of the virus went from 63,174 in mid-August to 42,424 at the end of August, a decrease of 17.6%. This drop in cases is accompanied by a decline in critical cases and deaths.

Regarding the reproduction rate, "it has stabilized below 1 for the third consecutive week, thus confirming the start of the downward curve in terms of positive cases," Bellefquih added. In addition, the positivity rate fell from 23% to 18%. For intubated cases, the recorded drop is -14%, as well as the death rate. On the other hand, the number of serious cases has slightly increased.

Furthermore, vaccinations are increasing at a sustained pace in the country with more than 33 million vaccines already administered (1st and 2nd dose). This picture should not be seen as an incentive to relax, the Ministry of Health observes, inviting Moroccans to be more vigilant in respecting the measures put in place to fight this virus, in order to avoid a new relapse.
