Morocco Reports 19 Deaths, 1,821 Injuries in Week-Long Road Safety Crisis

During the week of September 2 to 8, 2019, 19 people were killed and 1,821 others, including 77 seriously, were injured in 1,374 road accidents that occurred in urban areas, the Directorate General of National Security (DGSN) said on Tuesday, September 10.

Reviewing the accidents that occurred, the Directorate General of National Security (DGSN) recalled their causes, which are generally the inattention of pedestrians and drivers, the non-respect of traffic lights and stop signs, the lack of vehicle control, the non-respect of priority, speeding, driving in the left lane and in the wrong direction, driving under the influence of alcohol, unauthorized lane changes and defective overtaking, reports the MAP.

To avoid these accidents that mourn several families, strict measures are taken, namely the control and repression of offenses. Thus, according to the same source, 48,509 tickets and 11,603 reports were drawn up and submitted to the Public Prosecutor’s Office against 36,906 transactional fines paid.

For these preventive measures taken, 7,480,525 dirhams were collected, following the impounding of 4,554 vehicles, the seizure of 6,815 documents and the withdrawal from circulation of 234 vehicles.
