Morocco Reopens Key Border Crossing with Mauritania After Year-Long Closure

Moroccan authorities proceeded on Tuesday to reopen the Guerguerat border crossing, in southern Morocco and Mauritania, nearly a year after the militarization of the area by the Moroccan army.
This opening of the border crossing follows the recent decision of the Moroccan government to lift several health restrictions, according to Moroccan official sources to EFE.

The Moroccan army had launched on November 13, 2020, a military operation in the Guerguerat strip, to disperse a group of Sahrawi protesters who had blocked traffic for three weeks. The Moroccan authorities have never officially acknowledged the facts.
In response to this action, the Polisario declared the rupture of the ceasefire agreement signed with Rabat in 1991.
