Morocco to Reopen Borders June 15, Boosting Tourism Recovery Hopes

Morocco has announced the gradual reopening of borders starting June 15. Good news for tourism promoters, exhausted by the coronavirus crisis, which cost their sector some 64 billion dirhams in 2020.
The hope of revival is reborn among tourism professionals who dream, however, of a rapid resumption of mobility between the cities of the kingdom, on the way to collective immunity by vaccinating 70% of its citizens.
"The health pass will contribute to a tourism recovery, especially since citizens will have the possibility to travel to certain well-known tourist cities," explained sector analyst Zoubeir Bouhout, reported by Hespress, noting that the urgency for the players is to revive the sector at the national level through the launch of attractive programs aimed at increasing demand in certain areas, especially during the summer holidays.
In addition to Moroccan customers, industry professionals are also counting on hundreds of thousands of foreign tourists, especially Europeans, whose travel will be facilitated and assured by the opening of borders and the health pass.
Knowing that Morocco had welcomed 13 million foreign visitors in 2019 before the impact of the pandemic plunged statistics to their lowest, one can understand the enthusiasm for the rapid recovery of industry professionals.
According to official figures, the tourism sector generates 750,000 direct jobs and contributes 7% to the gross domestic product (GDP).
On March 19, 2020, the Moroccan authorities closed air, sea and land borders following the spread of the Coronavirus.
