Morocco's Renewable Energy Shift to Create Nearly 500,000 Jobs by 2044, Study Finds

The shift to renewable energy sources in Morocco will create up to 482,000 jobs over the next 20 years. This is revealed by a study by the Euro-Mediterranean Forum of Economic Science Institutes (FEMISE).

The future partnership between the EU, Morocco and Tunisia in the field of the environment is a source of job creation: highly skilled workers to build and maintain wind farms, solar power plants, and other energy installations.

Concerns about the effects of climate change in Morocco are growing. Aware of this, the kingdom is betting on any initiative aimed at offsetting its environmental impact and shielding the country from desertification, droughts and rising sea levels. The country thus plans to invest around $35 billion in the water, agriculture and forestry sectors over the next decade.

Morocco is therefore announcing major investments. But will it really be able to curb the negative impacts of climate change without political mitigation objectives to reduce carbon emissions? According to the explanations of John Holdren, professor at Harvard and energy advisor to former US President Barack Obama, while adaptation efforts, like Morocco’s current strategy, protect against the effects of climate fluctuations and global warming, mitigation efforts prevent environmental damage before it occurs.

Current climate mitigation policies include capping carbon emissions and transitioning to green energy sources like solar, wind and hydropower, he explained. "We essentially have three choices: mitigation, adaptation and suffering," the specialist Holdren specified. "The more we do in mitigation, the less adaptation will be needed and the less suffering."
