Morocco’s Red Meat Prices to Remain Stable Despite Ongoing Drought, Expert Says

Will meat prices experience an increase in Morocco due to the drought that has been affecting the country for several years? Here is the answer from an expert in the sector.
Faced with the persistent drought in Morocco, the president of the Red Meat Interprofessional Federation (FIVIAR), M’Hammed Karimine, reassures consumers; despite the difficult climatic conditions, the prices of red meats will remain stable. This announcement comes after a meeting with the Ministry of Agriculture dedicated to discussing strategies to counter the effects of the drought that has been affecting the country for five years, reports Le Matin.
Karimine explains that drought usually causes a reduction in prices, as breeders tend to reduce their herds to minimize losses. However, this trend has long-term consequences, including a reduction in the available herd after the drought. Currently, the price of red meat fluctuates between 80 and 85 DH per kilo, varying by region. In anticipation of Eid Al-Adha, he assures that there will be no shortage of animals to sacrifice, despite the inability to predict future rainfall that influences livestock yields.
Furthermore, Karimine emphasizes Morocco’s efforts to support the livestock sector, particularly through the 2024 Finance Law, which allows the import of 200,000 head of cattle, exempt from value-added tax and customs duties. This measure aims to strengthen the national herd, even if current imports have not yet reached the set quotas.
